miimaaMsa dars'ana:

Introduction:

miimaaMsa dars'ana is also known as puurva-miimaaMsa, to distinguish it from veedaaMta school, which is known as uttara-miimaaMsa.

The miimaaMsa-suutra-s of jaimini (200 AD) is the basic text of this system. It is a voluminous work comprising of 2500 suutra-s divided into 60 sections spread over 12 chapters. The bhaaSya of s'abara swaami (400 AD) is the most authoritative commentary and interpretation. prabhaakara's (650 AD) interpretation of s'abara bhaaSya is yet to be printed. kumaarila bhaTTa (700 AD) has also commented on s'abara bhaaSya. This work is in three parts called s'looka-vaattika, taMtra-vaarttika and TupTiikaa. prakaraNa-paMcikaa of s'aalikanaatha (a pupil of prabhaakara), s'aastra-diipikaa of paarthasaarathi (900 AD), nyaaya-maalaavistara of maadhava vidyaaraNya (1350 AD) and artha-saMgraha of laugaakSi bhaaskara (17th Century AD) are some of the other works of this system.

The importance of miimaaMsa system is in the detailed methodologies it give for correct interpretation of veedic texts. miimaaMsa focuses on the correct interpretation of complicated veedic injunctions regarding veedic rituals. In miimaaMsa, the Book becomes more important than the Maker of the Book.
