Holds a pre-eminent place among the puraaNa-s. Known for its philosophical content, devotional fervour and literary beauty. Describes the life and teachings of Lord kRSNa. A narration by the young sage s'uka, son of vyaasa, to the king pariikSit while waiting for his imminent death. Includes the stories of pariikSit, jaya and vijaya, hiraNyakas'ipu, prahlaada, kapila, destruction of dakSa's sacrifice by s'iva, dhruva, jaDabharata, descent of gaMgaa to Earth, destruction of tripura by s'iva, churning of the ocean, vaamana, etc. Also included are the descriptions of the cosmic form of God and the creation of the world. kRSNa's life is depicted in detail. The famous uddhava giita appears here. The description of kaliyuga, the age in which we are now living, is graphic. There are several commentaries on s'riimad bhaagavata.
