matsya puraaNa

Taught by Lord viSNu in his matsya (fish) avataara. Seems to include material from vaayu and viSNu-dharmoottara puraaNa-s. Some scholars feel that this was originally a vaiSNava work, later on modified by the s'aiva-s. Apart from usual topics such as creation, dissolution, geneologies of RSi-s and kings, it includes stories of kaca, deevayaani, yayaati, puru, geneologies of fire worshipping braahmaNa-s, vrata-s (religious vows), daana-s, the holy places prayaaga, vaaraaNasi and river narmada, duties of a king, omens, iconography, building construction, etc. The last chapter gives a beautiful summary of the entire puraaNa.
