While the veeda-s form the primary scriptures in the Indian tradition, the upaaMga-s are considered ancilliary scriptures. The upaaMga-s include the SaT-dars'ana-s - the six schools of scientific inquiry, the smRti's and dharma-s'aastra-s that prescribe the code of conduct at both personal and societal levels, the puraaNa-s that sing the glory of the puraaNa puruSa and incidentally cover a whole gamut of topics both sacred and secular and itihaasa or history including the great epics raamayaNa and mahaabhaarata which are themselves veritable encyclopaedia of dharma. The famous bhagavad-giita, one of three prasthaana-traya-s (the other two being the upaniSat-s and the brahma-suutra-s), is part of mahaabhaarata, the largest book ever written in the history of mankind.
